Top 10 National Parks in Sri Lanka
Sri Lanka, called the Pearl of the Indian Ocean, is a paradise for nature and wildlife enthusiasts. The national parks are incredibly diverse and offer visitors breathtaking experiences surrounded by lush jungle, wetlands, and savannahs. If you are looking for an eco-adventure, here are our top 10 national parks in Sri Lanka and why Cloud Nine Wilpattu is the best start to your journey.
1. Wilpattu National Park
Wilpattu is Sri Lanka’s largest national park and one of its oldest. It is noted for its naturally occurring lakes called “Willus” and is a leading spot to see leopards, sloth bears, and deer. It also has a very tranquil feel and is less crowded than other parks, providing visitors with a unique wilderness experience, which is especially true when starting from Cloud Nine Wilpattu.
2. Yala National Park
Yala is known to house some of the highest densities of leopards in the world. If you love big cats, Yala is a must. In addition to leopards, Yala has elephants, crocodiles, and an extensive range of birds.
3. Udawalawe National Park
Udawalawe is the hardest place for the closest encounters with wild elephants — these elephants are also sometimes found in herds in the open grassland areas. Along with elephants, there were lots of buffalo, jackals, and a good number of birds.
4. Minneriya National Park
Minneriya is home to the “Gathering.” This is a seldom-seen spectacle of hundreds of elephants gathered around the Minneriya reservoir that occurs in the dry season.
5. Kaudulla National Park
Kaudulla National Park is located next to Minneriya National Park. This park is known as an alternate location where large numbers of elephants can be seen both before and during your wildlife safari in Sri Lanka’s National Parks, particularly in the migration season.
6. Horton Plains National Park
Horton Plains is a highland plateau in Sri Lanka that is known for its cool, misty scenery and as the location for the dramatic cliff known as World’s End. Horton Plains is certainly one of the best places in Sri Lanka for hiking and to see endangered species — you certainly will be hiking rather than enjoying long sightseeing rides in jeeps!
7. Bundala National Park
As a birdwatcher’s paradise, Bundala has many migratory birds, including flamingos. It also has elephants, crocodiles, and turtles.
8. Kumana National Park
Kumana is known for its birdlife and coastal wetlands; it is a tranquil getaway to see elephants and leopards, too.
9. Gal Oya National Park
Gal Oya is notable for its boat safaris, where visitors can witness elephants swimming between islands — a very rare experience.
10. Sinharaja Forest Reserve
Sinharaja is a UNESCO World Heritage rainforest with high endemism and offers immersive jungle treks and much biodiversity.
